Attention Point Park University photo students:

Do you have any great shots of Pittsburgh in your personal archive?

We are looking for your best images to be the artwork in an upcoming fundraiser for the School of Communication travel fund (Ireland, Prague, Washington D.C.).

The winning images will be printed as note cards, and sold at upcoming department events.

There will only be one winner, so in order to be eligible you must submit a total of 5 "Pittsburgh" images that work well together as a set, and have a consistent quality suitable for reproduction.

Any entry containing less than 5 images will not be considered. 

In addition to having their images appear on the note cards, and their name/photo credit on the back -- the winner will also receive a $100.00 honorarium for supplying the art for the fundraiser.

You can submit photos of anything you want, as long as it fits the "Pittsburgh" theme.

Deadline to submit your photos is August 15th. You can use photos that you already have from around town, or go out over the next month and take some new shots.

LightBox Photographic Gallery is pleased to announce the call for submissions for Photo⊕Craft.

LightBox Photographic Gallery and Plates to Pixels online gallery will collaborate with this Photographic Group show.

LightBox Photographic Gallery and Plates to Pixels are established exhibition spaces, one in the real dimension and one in the virtual world, both promoting the best of alternative and creative imagery. Working together to showcase this work, this group show celebrates our appreciation of the finest in photographic imagery. The exhibit will be displayed at LightBox Photographic Gallery from August 13 – October 2nd, 2011, a full 7 weeks, and will also be featured in Plates to Pixels online gallery.

In this group exhibition we are seeking works that have a strong conceptual voice balanced with a high level of craftsmanship. We encourage photographers working in all mediums of photography from mixed media, alternative process, silver gelatin, to innovative digital methods to submit. We plan to exhibit a full-bodied show, with a wide-range of work that strongly represents the unconventional methods currently available to photographers. We encourage everyone, both established and emerging photographic artist to submit, we wish to showcase a group of the best photographic artist working in the field today.

Photo⊕Craft will be juried by Blue Mitchell, curator of Plates to Pixels, along with co-jurors, Michael & Chelsea Vincent Granger, directors of LightBox Photographic Gallery.

Infinite Editions is presenting an opportunity to help a graduating BFA/MFA student better realize their artistic vision and conclude their academic journey with the finest quality production services available. We are awarding annually one $5,000 scholarship towards the production, at the Infinite Editions studio, of one BFA or MFA student's thesis exhibition for Fall 2011 or Spring 2012 semester.

The recipient will receive access to our fine art digital printmaking services and work in close collaboration with our team to produce a body of work specifically for their thesis exhibition.

Eligibility

Applicants must be enrolled in a college or university in the US and preparing for their upcoming Fall 2011 or Spring 2012 semester thesis exhibition. Only graduate MFA and undergraduate BFA students are eligible.

Applicants must be planning on creating work that utilizes digital printing as a component. The scholarship recipient must be able to submit their final images to our studio no less than 30 days before their thesis opening for Fall 2011 or Spring 2012 semester.

Applicants must:

1. Fill out application form on the Infinite Editions website : Click to apply
2. Provide a short biography about yourself as an artist and about your plans for after graduation. (300 maximum)
3. Provide a proposal statement about the concepts and formal approaches to your thesis work. Describe the style of photography or art you plan on/or have created for your thesis. Include ideas about how you envision your final presentation to look and how your concept for your thesis relates to your presentation. (800 words maximum)
4. Submit one letter of recommendation from an academic reference. The letter must be submitted electronically and on your reference's letterhead. (.PDF or .DOC format)
5. Submit up to ten properly labeled JPEG images (combine the images either .ZIP or .PDF format ) Longest side at 800 pixels, 72dpi of their potential thesis work. Images do not have to be the final images included in the final presentation of your thesis work. Infinite Editions accepts works in progress, or work that is very similar to the type of photography that will be used in the final thesis presentation.

Evaluation Criteria

Infinite Editions is particularly interesting in working with emerging artists who push the boundaries of photography and traditional image making. Risk-takers, not those interested in merely putting framed pictures on the wall, are more likely to be considered. Interesting, relevant and conceptually thoughtful work is encouraged. Submissions will be judged on conceptual and technical merit as well as clarity of submitted proposals in relation to the submitted imagery. A jury of professionals in the fine art industry will select the scholarship recipient.

NATGEO Magazine Contest

Light does not shield us from tragedy and horror. Darkness cannot hide all our fears and monsters. Both of these elements give revelation to our narrative that touches upon depression, burden, loss. These heartbreaking, infinitesimal seconds are our crossroads.

This series of photographs are based on blues narrative. A narrative that is about choice – that precipice of the human story between lightness and darkness. The chiaroscuro effect of these photographs is held together in that each image reveals a private moment.

Grant and Proposal Writing for Artists

Grant and Proposal Writing for Artists Fund Your Creative Projects Saturday, June 11, 10 a.m. - 4 p.m. As an individual artist, you are often able to directly apply for grants from government arts agencies, private foundations and a variety of nonprofit organizations. This class is for anyone interested in improving his or her chances of receiving funding and takes you through every stage of successful grant writing. The workshop is taught by three local experts: Mary Navarro, Fundraising Consultant and Adjunct Faculty Member at Carnegie Mellon University; Renee Piechocki, Artist and Director of Pittsburgh's Office of Public Art; and Ellen Fleurov, Executive Director, Silver Eye Center for Photography. They will focus on planning, researching, and crafting letters of inquiry to potential funders; writing narratives; and budgeting, packaging and submitting your proposal. The class also covers why and how grants are made to individuals; how to tailor your proposal to a specific source; and funding opportunities for photographers and visual artists. Fee: $55 for Silver Eye members; $70 for non-members Limited to 30 students Location: Pittsburgh Filmmakers Meet the Teachers Mary Navarro has more than 20 years of experience in the nonprofit sector, working as a grantmaker for The Heinz Endowments as well as a fundraiser, project manager, teacher and consultant. Mary develops strategy, manages projects, and provides training and technical assistance for a range of clients, including the Westmoreland Museum of American Art, The Heinz Endowments, The Carnegie Museum of Art, Point Park University and the Funders Network for Smart Growth and Liveable Communities. She is an Adjunct Faculty Member in the Master of Arts Management program at Carnegie Mellon University, where she focuses on funding for the arts. Renee Piechocki is an artist as well as the Director of Pittsburgh's Office of Public Art, a partnership of the Greater Pittsburgh Arts Council and the Department of City Planning. As a member of the collaborative Two Girls Working (along with Tiffany Ludwig), she created the public art installation Trappings: Stories of Women, Power, and Clothing, which has been touring worldwide. The project was published by Rutgers University Press in 2007. It is currently on view at the Portland International Airport gallery. Ellen Fleurov is the Executive Director of the Silver Eye Center for Photography. During the course of the Too Shallow for Diving: the 21st Century is Treading Water exhibition you will be working to document the artists at work in the galleries and Jewish Community Center; a series of events with environmental organizations and a number of artist workshops.

The nature of this assignment is people-oriented and photo-journalistic. Your challenge will be to capture artists at work in unposed portraits and then, participants interacting with each other and with workshop leaders. You will be working with the exhibition curator as well as the Museum Director.

Your photographs will be used in a forthcoming catalogue for the exhibition, featuring an essay by Elaine A. King, Carnegie Mellon Professor of Art History, Theory and Criticism. The catalogue will provide you with an impressive portfolio piece in print; with full photo credits. These photographs will also be used for the exhibition's online presence, web site and social media.

DETAILS:
The position is unpaid, part-time and calls for scheduling over the course of a week-long installation period beginning Friday May 6. The exhibition's opening event is the evening of May 14th with a series of workshops and events to follow May through the end of July - with a mix of shooting during the day, evenings and weekends. A credited internship can be set up through the museum and your degree-granting institution.

You will be using your own camera and photographic toolkit. We will provide a portable drive for file storage.

With generous support from Canon USA and Leica Camera, LOOK3 will be offering 10 full workshop scholarships to undergraduate and graduate students enrolled in 2-4 year accredited programs. Workshop instructors are Mary Ellen Mark, Christopher Anderson, and Alex and Rebecca Webb. Deadline to apply is May 8, 2011 and scholarship recipients will be notified May 14, 2011. The application consists of a submission of 10-15 images from a single project, preferably a recent body of work, and an email to workshops@look3.org.
