bookMARKs

This is an OPEN CALL to all members of the Society for Photographic Education (SPE) and affiliates and alumni of the New York Foundation for the Arts MARK program.

bookMARKs is an exhibition of self-published photo-based printed matter by SPE and NYFA MARK artists. The exhibition will be in early November 2011 at Syracuse University, held in conjunction with the Society for Photographic Education's Northeast and Mid-Atlantic Regions' 2011 Conference, hosted by Light Work and Syracuse University. The focus of this year's Conference is photography and publishing and it will include the participation of Darius Himes, Mary Virginia Swanson, Doug Dubois and Alec Soth, among many others.

All artists associated with SPE and NYFA MARK are strongly encouraged to participate in this exhibition. We are looking for photo-based and photo-related publication projects, including self-published books, booklets, zines, posters, chapbooks, pamphlets and any other imaginable way that artists publish. In fact, we are very interested in a variety of publishing strategies and experiments.

If your work involves photography in any way and you are interested in self-publishing and how publication transforms the presentation and perception of your work, then this exhibition is for you.

THE CELL PIXEL PROJECT

Every tool has its own voice and if you listen you then find a way to synthesize the attributes of that voice with the unborn expressions of your own aesthetic.
The cell phone as a capture device is a democratic technology just as the Kodak Brownie was, except that the cell phone gives the user immediacy of image feedback and greater control.
For this reason it is a most utilitarian of image making tools. The family snapshot for Uncle Harry, the dented fender for the insurance company, the image of Louboutin shoes at 75% off that you email to your best friend (even if only for a fantasy of desire)…all of these are immediate functions of an image capture device.

But the immediacy and control are technical attributes, which allow me as an artist a highly dynamic level of spontaneity. The iPhone allows me to work from an almost stream of consciousness conceptual approach. Visual juxtapositions can instantly be related to ideas or concepts that spring to mind. No planning, no prep, no moving equipment, these images are more like spontaneous visual haiku or jazz riffs. The iPhone as an image capture device has a very different voice from any other camera I use and so it allows me to “see” it a different way.
